Vairagya

Updated: Jul 16, 2024

In Utkatasana (chair pose) one controls the burning feeling in the thighs with breath and banda and directs the mind away from the sense of pain. Do not attach to how well or low or correct you might think you are doing the pose. In fact it dosnt matter how it looks and dont be attached to how well you think others beside you or the instructor is doing it. Just hold it. Focus your eyes on something like the beautiful foliage we are looking at from the shala.

Practice this daily, and you will build new synapses in the brain that give you true knowledge and experience, that you can achieve anything with control of the mind

Vairagya roughly translates as non-attachment or dispassion.

Sage Patanjalis' Yoga Sutra 1.12 states "abhyasa-vairagyaabhyam tannirodaha"

Non attachment combined with practice (abhyasa), is the key to restraint of the modifications of the mind.

this is a foundation of raja yoga and needs to be applied to assana and all the yogis daily affairs.
